The Flat Rock Archives and Museum is hosting its 1st Annual Commemorative Ancestors’ Walk and Community History Celebration Saturday, October 30, 2010.

Flat Rock Archives and Museum invites you to join efforts to restore, preserve and protect the historic Flat Rock Slave Cemetery—the resting place of more than two hundred slaves and ancestors. The cemetery is east-southeast of Atlanta.

Events begin at 8 AM with a benefit walk/run on paved paths through the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, beginning at the Murphy Candler School Trailhead off Klondike Road. Registration begins at 7 AM; preregister online here.

Assembly is at 10 AM. At 11 AM, the procession and consecration ceremony will be lead by Massachusetts 54th Company 1 and the Atlanta Chapter of Buffalo Soldiers, Georgia Geechee Gullah Shouters, Mule Team and Wagon of Flowers, Community Religious Leaders, and the Direct Descendants of the Flat Rock Community. The procession will go from Old Evans Mills Road to the Flat Rock Slave Cemetery.

The main celebration begins at 1 pm at the former Bryant Family Farm, at 3979 Crossvale Road, Lithonia, 30038. See Massachusetts 54th Company 1 & the Atlanta Chapter of Buffalo Soldiers reenactment camps. Meet slave actors in period clothing. Learn about to the community from historians, archaeologists.
