Congratulations to the Greater Atlanta Archaeological Society (GAAS), who recently accepted the winning trophy from the Society for Georgia Archaeology (SGA) President Tammy Herron, at the Fall 2013 meeting of the SGA held at the Zell B. Miller Learning Center Saturday, October 26 on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. GAAS President David Kasriel was present to accept the trophy.

The SGA Chapter Challenge was initiated in June 2013 as part of the celebration of the 20th year of Archaeology Awareness in Georgia. The challenge was for chapters (and their members) to purchase and donate copies of Frontiers in the Soil to any Georgia libraries not holding copies of this easy-to-read text by Roy S. Dickens, Jr. with creative color cartoon illustrations by James L. McKinley.

GAAS took the trophy by purchasing thirty-six copies of the book for libraries in the Dekalb and Fulton Counties area. The runner-up chapter was Augusta Archaeological Society with 14 copies purchased and donated. Third place was Gwinnett Archaeological Research Society with 11 copies. A total of 67 copies were purchased during the Chapter Challenge! Thank you to all the chapters participating.

It is not too late to order additional copies of this archaeological guide. It makes a great gift for educators, Scouts, students, avocational volunteers, and all others interested in the state’s archaeological heritage.
