Archaeologist Steven Hammock will speak to the Blue Ridge Archaeology Guild (B.R.A.G.) on Wednesday, February 14 at 6:00 pm at the Dahlonega Parks and Recreation Building. His topic is “Creek Rising: Ethnogenesis in Middle Georgia’s Ocmulgee River Valley,” ethnohistory and archaeology of the Historic Creek Indians in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Macon native Stephen Hammock has been an archaeologist for 20 years. He trained at historic Jamestown through the University of Virginia, earned his BA from NYU, then an MA from Eastern Carolina University in Underwater Archaeology. He was Archaeologist at Robins AFB from 2002-2012, and in 2003 organized the Ocmulgee Archaeological Society, conducting projects across Middle Georgia.
Currently Hammock is reading for his DPhil in Archaeology from the University of Oxford in England, where his thesis topic involves archaeological and historical evidence of the Creek Indians of the Ocmulgee River Valley from AD 1680 to 1715.
The B.R.A.G. meetings are free and open to the public, so visitors are always welcome.
