Here’s the text of the SGA’s press release of October 21st, 2010:\

Glynn County 4th grade teacher Ellen Provenzano was awarded the prized George S. Lewis Archaeological Stewardship Award by the Society for Georgia Archaeology. The award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the preservation of archaeological sites within Georgia.

As Glynn County Schools Archaeology Education Coordinator, Ms. Provenzano has worked for sixteen years in this stellar partnership between the school system and the National Park Service at Fort Frederica National Monument. In this role she has exposed 15,000 students to the concept of archaeological preservation, while teaching them a wide range of state-mandated subjects and higher order thinking skills. She has led two-hundred teachers through intensive week-long workshops. Ms. Provenzano has spent countless volunteer hours working with archaeology clubs, camps, booths, and even an archaeology bus. Throughout, she provides children, families, and individuals with accurate information that helps Georgians preserve our non-renewable archaeological sites.

The Society for Georgia Archaeology, established in the 1930s, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Its mission is to unite all persons interested in the archaeology of Georgia and to work actively to preserve, study, and interpret Georgia’s historic and prehistoric remains.
