This month’s speaker is Dr. Daniel Seinfeld from the Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research where he serves as the Supervisor of the State’s Archaeological Collection and Conservation Laboratories. His research projects include studies of Florida’s ancient mound building cultures, beads from early Spanish expeditions and the use of 3D imaging in Archaeology.

Dr. Seinfeld will be presenting a program titled “The Archaeology of Florida Mounds: Case Studies from Lake Jackson, Letchworth and Fort Center”. Earthen mounds are one of the more enduring and striking monuments left behind by the prehistoric people of the Southeastern United States. This talk discusses mounds as a form of architecture. As with any type of architecture, the form, meanings and activities associated with mounds changed over time. Three mound complexes, Lake Jackson, Lectchworth and Fort Center illustrate the diverse forms of mounds over space and time in Florida. These examples show the central role of mounds in prehistoric religious practice and society. I believe that our group will find Dr. Seinfeld’s program interesting and very informative and I hope that we will have a large attendance for his talk.

Blue Ridge Archaeology Guild

This month’s Blue Ridge Archaeology Guild (B.R.A.G.) guest speaker is Virginia Skeeter, a B.R.A.G. member, who recently returned from a dig in Shikhin, Israel. She has been a volunteer on digs in Israel since 1996. Virginia will be showing slides from Shikhin, which was a small pottery and lamp producing village outside of Nazareth. It prospered at the height of the “Galilean pottery” period during the Roman Occupation of King Herod’s reign 2000 years ago. The village was mentioned, along with the neighboring city, Sepphoris (modern Tzipori), by first-century historian Flavius Josephus. A question and answer session will follow the talk.

B.R.A.G. will also be hosing a talk on September 14th by Dan Roper.
